During the holidays, Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill (DHCI) relies on the generosity of community members, including neighbors, local businesses, community organizations, and volunteers to help fulfill residents' wishes. The facilities seek support from the community in "adopting" residents who have little family support or by making other donations.

There are several ways to help:

  • Adopt an individual resident: Donors can buy one or more items on a resident's wish list (spending a recommended maximum of $25.00) and deliver the gift(s), unwrapped in a gift bag, to the volunteer office or switchboard reception area at the resident's facility.
  • Make a general donation: Donors can purchase items from a list of suggested gifts that are used to fill gift bags for residents who have not been adopted and drop them off at either facility. (Any remaining items are used throughout the year to fill resident birthday bags and special requests for residents.)
  • Make a monetary donation: Donors can mail a gift card or check (made payable to "DHCI") to the volunteer office at the facility, and leave the holiday shopping to nursing home staff.

Please see the Delaware Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD) contact information page for DHCI location and mailing address. Gifts for individual residents should be clearly labeled. To allow time for processing, DHCI staff kindly request that all donations be made by early December.
