DPH ADOPTS NEW RAPID HIV TEST

Delaware's Division of Public Health (DPH) announces the adoption of a new HIV rapid test for use in DPH clinics and community testing programs statewide. After evaluating several test technologies, DPH offers the Unigold Rapid HIV test which requires only a drop or two of blood from a finger prick to produce results in about 10 minutes. The test is offered free of charge. The Unigold test was selected because:

  • It delivers accurate results in just 10 minutes, making it more convenient for clients and providers to fit into busy schedules.
  • The shelf life of the product is 12 months, making ordering and supply to community providers easier.
  • It offered a cost savings. While the previous OraQuick rapid test cost DPH $13 each, the Unigold test costs $10.

"We made the decision to adopt blood testing exclusively," said Jim Dickinson, DPH HIV program administrator. "Oral testing is accurate, but blood testing is the most accurate." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 50 percent of all new HIV infections are passed from those who simply do not know that they are infected. HIV testing is recommended for all Delaware adults.

To find the HIV testing site nearest you, visit www.hivtest.org and type in your ZIP code or call 1-800-232-4636 (1-800-CDC-INFO) or the Public Health HIV Prevention Program at 302-744-1050.
