New Rules for Delaware's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families

Effective November 1, 2006 the Division of Social Services will begin implementing new TANF rules. TANF is based on partnership and shared responsibility between the customer, DSS, and contractors throughout the community working together in the commitment to assist and prepare families for economic self-sufficiency.

In order to receive a TANF check, clients will need to do the following:

Comply with Child Support Enforcement rules

Cooperate for 2 weeks in a row (Monday through Sunday) with the Employment & Training (E&T) Contractors by completing the required work hours each week;
- 30 hours per week for a single parent household
- 35 hours per week for a two-parent household
- 55 hours per week for a two-parent household with a child/children in the Purchase of Care Program
Continue to cooperate with the E&T Contractors in order to become or remain eligible for TANF

Provide proof of your hours worked and your gross pay to the contractor each week.
(Please keep all pay stubs from your employer(s))

If you choose not to do what is required of you after you get your TANF check, your TANF case will be closed for one month or until you do what is required, which ever is longer.

If your case closes, you will not receive a check for at least one month.

If your case closes and you re-apply for cash, you will need to comply with the Employment Contractor for 4 weeks in a row before you can get reopened in the TANF Program.

DSS does not want your case to close, so if you have any problems with meeting the required hours, please call your E&T contractor.
