DRINKING WATER NOTICE
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
Cannon’s Iron and Metal Has Levels of
MTBE Above Drinking Water Standards
Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.
As part of a local ground water investigation, the Division of Public Health, Office of Drinking Water monitored for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results we received on 06/11/07 show that our system exceeds the standard, or maximum contaminant level 10 ppb, for Methyltert Butyl Ether (MTBE). Our test result for MTBE was 17 ppb.
What should I do?
- You do need to use an alternative (e.g., bottled) water supply. If you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.
What does this mean?
This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing MTBE in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems of the central nervous system, including loss of muscle coordination, tremors, difficulty breathing and drowsiness.
The Office of Drinking Water is working in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control to locate the source of the contaminants. We anticipate resolving the problem within the coming weeks.
