New Report Covers Burden
of Diabetes in Delaware: 2009

The Delaware Diabetes Prevention and Control Program has published a second report on the Burden of Diabetes in Delaware. The new report, which updates a 2002 burden booklet, was released in July 2009. This report examines the prevalence of diabetes in Delaware, its risk factors, prevention and management of the disease, complications, disparities, costs of treatment, and mortality data. A new section of the report covers "State Initiatives for Healthy Communities."

"Since the mid-1990s, the prevalence of diabetes has more than doubled among Delawareans," according to the report.  "Approximately 58,000 Delawareans over the age of 18 currently have diabetes."

"Obesity is an especially strong risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes. In recent years, the overweight-obesity prevalence rate in Delaware has increased at an alarming rate," according to the report. "Currently, 37 percent of Delaware adults 18 and older are overweight; an additional 28 percent are obese."

The costs of diabetes are very high. The report's executive summary says that, "In Delaware, health care expenditures stemming from diabetes-related services and care approached $857 million from 2001-2004."
