SBHC Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is there a cost for School-Based Health Center (SBHC) services?

The parent or guardian’s insurance(s) may be billed for covered services. Contact the School-Based Health Center for additional information. School-Based Health Center Location.


Q. Can my child use the services if s/he is not enrolled in the school?

Services are only provided to students whose parents have enrolled them in the centers where they have been established which are in twenty-seven of the twenty-nine Delaware public high schools.


Q. Can my child use the SBHC as a primary health care provider?

The health center does not replace the primary health care provider. Centers coordinate such services however. Services include sports physicals, some immunizations, mental health counseling, nutrition counseling, pregnancy testing, etc.


Q. Once my child is registered at the center, will s/he have to register each year that s/he is in high school?

No, once the parent registers the student, s/he can use the services while they remain in high school. However, centers may ask the students to update information on the registration form like home telephone number, type of insurance, etc.


Q. Can my child use services that I have not signed him up for?

No, for example, if a parent agrees that the student can receive medical services but not mental health services, the student will not be able to receive mental health counseling without approval.


Q. Do Delaware School-Based Health Centers provide contraceptives?

With School Board approval, there may be limited reproductive health services provided in some school-based health centers. However, these services would only be provided where the parent or guardian has agreed that their child may receive such services.


Q. Are my child’s records confidential?

School-based health information Is protected by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996). Therefore, all information is confidential and subject to student release of information before it is shared.
