NEW RADIATION MACHINE FACILITY PERMIT FEES ANNOUNCED

On Sept. 30, 2008, the Delaware Authority on Radiation Protection will implement annual permit fees for registration of radiation machine (x-ray) facilities, as authorized in Senate Bill 108, signed by Gov. Minner on June 26. Delaware Division of Public Health's Office of Radiation Control (ORC) serves as the administrative agent for the Authority on Radiation Protection, and will administer the new fees. Fees vary depending on criteria in the legislation, such as health specialty and number of tests performed. Application forms for registering new facilities and for renewing existing registered facilities can be accessed at www.delaware.gov

Senate Bill 108 can be accessed via the Legislative Hall Internet Site, at http://legis.delaware.gov

Health care providers, research laboratories, teaching institutions and industrial manufacturing facilities depend on radiation machines for a variety of beneficial uses: to diagnose disease, administer radiation therapy to cancer patients, measure products for quality control and carry out biomedical or environmental studies for research and development purposes. Approximately 700 state-registered radiation machine facilities are located in Delaware. Radiation machine facilities are inspected periodically to evaluate the safety performance of x-ray equipment, to ensure radiation protection for the patient, facility staff, and members of the public.

Delaware Health and Social Services is committed to improving the quality of the lives of Delaware's citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
