DPH MEDICAL DIRECTOR NAMED TO PRESTIGIOUS BOARD AT 2008 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE (ACPM) IN AUSTIN TEXAS
The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) is pleased to announce that DPH Medical Director, Dr. Herman Ellis, has been elected for a two-year term on the Board of Regents and the Executive Committee of the prestigious American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM). The announcement was made last week at the ACPM's annual meeting, Preventive Medicine 2008, held in Austin, Texas.
The ACPM is the national professional society for physicians who are board certified in preventive medicine, and other specialties committed to disease prevention and health promotion. Preventive Medicine is the only specialty of medicine which recognizes the physicians skills in clinical and population based medicine.
In his role as public health regent for ACPM, Dr. Ellis will maintain a relationship with other public health organizations, most notably the American Association of Public Health Physicians and the American Public Health Association, represent the board, serve as a mentor to other ACPM members and serve on the policy committee.
The ACPM is considered the foremost physician organization on issues related to disease prevention and health promotion. Members of the board must be fellows of the organization which is attained by being board certified in preventive medicine or another American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) specialty, three years of service to the College and/or in the field and references from fellows of the College. Members include physicians from Canada and other countries as well as the US.
Preventive medicine specialists combine three skill sets:
- Knowledge of human biology, disease and disease interventions
- Using epidemiology and biostatistics to address health issues on groups or communities
- Policy administration in implementing group or community intervention.
Preventive medicine specialists fill positions in public health, academia, healthcare and other settings. Dr. Ellis is one of only a few preventive medicine specialists in Delaware and the only board certified specialist of public health and general preventive medicine in DPH.
