DPH TRAINS INTERPRETERS IN EVENT OF EMERGENCY
To ensure effective communications to all Delawareans in the event of an emergency or disaster, the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) has successfully conducted a complete session of Medical Interpreter Corp training. This 40 hour training, conducted by the Cross Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP), was completed by 19 bilingual Delaware residents on April 11th.
Over 14,000 Delawareans do not speak English well or at all. If a disaster or catastrophic event with hazardous conditions, health or medical situations should occur, DPH would deploy the Medical Interpreters Corp (MIC) in order to effectively communicate with those unable to speak English or to assist them in hospital or clinic settings. The training focused on fundamental interpreting skills, an overview of the healthcare system, the nature of culture and its impact on interpreting, communication skills, advocacy and professional development. A variety of teaching methods were used, including role-playing, group discussion, practice sessions, and homework.
The majority of those trained speak Spanish and English, and two participants are trained in American Sign Language.
The DPH and MIC will continue to seek committed bilingual volunteers who have mastered the English language and at least one other, so that under any circumstances, Delawareans can communicate effectively.
For information or to inquire about trainings, please call DPH at (302) 744-4701. The next MIC training is scheduled for Spring 2009. Classes are offered at no charge, but there is a 25 person limit and registration will be on a first come first served basis.
Delaware Health and Social Services is committed to improving the quality of the lives of Delaware's citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
