FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS INVITED TO RETAIL FOOD SAFETY EXPO 2007

"Food Safety-And So Much More" is the theme of the Aug. 22 Food Safety Expo for food establishment managers, to be held in the Modern Maturity Center's East Wing at 1121 Forrest Ave. in Dover. The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and organizers will accept a limited number of walk-in registrants.

The Retail Food Safety Expo is hosted by the Delaware Food Safety Council and Delaware's Division of Public Health (DPH). Food safety partners from both industry and the academic community will provide their unique local perspectives on how to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. The Expo also features several DPH exhibits, including immunizations, lead poisoning prevention and emergency preparedness.

Dr. Jaime H. Rivera, DPH's director, will join Barbara A. Brown, constituent relations director for Governor Ruth Ann Minner, to recognize the nominees and winners of the 2007 Governor's Award for Excellence in Retail Food Safety. The annual award is presented to permitted restaurants, institutions and retail food stores displaying conscientious and committed efforts to food and beverage safety. Anitra Brown-Reed of the Food and Drug Administration's Philadelphia District Office will address the ALERT system of food defense on the national level. This program provides establishment operators with a practical method to ensure their operations are as safe as possible from intentional threats.

The Retail Food Safety Expo includes a complimentary buffet lunch. To register, call DPH's Office of Food Protection at (302) 744-4546. Space is limited.
