200 CAMERAS INSTALLED AND OPERATING AT DPC

Digital System Allows Hospital to Monitor Critical Areas Continuously, Easily Review Events and Improve Performance

New Castle, DE - Over 200 newly installed video surveillance cameras are now operating at the Delaware Psychiatric Center's Kent and Sussex buildings and exterior courtyards. The high performance digital camera system, which went out for bid in spring 2007, is part of a larger safety project that has been in the works since early this year, which includes all new lighting for DPC parking lots. Extra care has to be taken to ensure that cameras protect patients, staff, and visitors, while preserving patient privacy.

The strategically located cameras transmit a continuous video feed to a master digital hard drive storage system and to each nursing station where real time video is displayed on desktop computer monitors and digital video recorders (DVR) store video for easy recall and review. There master video review station allows for review any camera feed and extracting previously recorded video. In total, the system is comprised of 9 DVRs, each 1 terabyte (1000 gigabytes) and an automatic 30 day video data retention window.

"The new video surveillance system will be an effective tool for increasing security, protecting hospital employees and patients, and providing valuable visual evidence that can be used to assist in complaint investigations," said Vincent P. Meconi, Secretary DHSS. "It's easy for us to export video for legal evidence and investigations, when that need arises."

"In addition to providing increased security and safety for everyone at the hospital, the new system is another key instrument in the performance improvement efforts and quality assurance measures already in place at the hospital." explained Acting Hospital Director Guy Perrotti. "I believe staff and the patients are please about the system as they understand that the camera system is here for their safety and quality assurance."

"One of the advantages of the new video system is peace of mind for patients, family and staff." said Renata Henry, Director, Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health. "I think staff is especially looking forward to the cameras that will monitor the parking lots during the day and evening when they're leaving late at night."

The parking lot cameras are expected to be operational in two weeks time .

More importantly, Perrotti notes, "This new system will help us achieve our goals of using technology resources in ways that help improve overall patient care."
