FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CERTIFICATION OF RADIATION TECHNICIANS
Final amendments to the existing Delaware Radiation Technologist/Technician Regulation were published on the State Register of Regulations on Feb. 1, announced Delaware Health and Social Services’ Division of Public Health (DPH).
The amended “Radiation Technologist/Technician Regulation” reflects changes concerning issuing certificates, taking examinations, submitting supporting documentation, and a fee increase. The amended regulations are effective Feb. 10, 2006
The amended regulation specifies a minimum age of 18 years for certification and specifies conditions for re-testing following failure of a certification examination. The amended regulation introduces a 30-day grace period to enable certificate holders to continue to perform their work administering radiation to patients while seeking to renew their certification. It specifies supporting documentation required for name changes, and increases the certification renewal fee for all categories of Radiation Technologists/Technicians from $10 every four years, to $50 every four years. Effective March 10, 2006, applications without the $50 renewal fee will be returned to the applicant.
Health care providers depend on radiation for dental and medical X-ray machines, computed tomography scanners, and radiopharmaceutical agents to diagnose or treat disease. Over 800 state-registered radiation facilities and 30 FDA-certified mammography facilities are located in Delaware. Health care professionals who are not state-licensed practitioners such as physicians, veterinarians, dentists or dental hygienists, must meet certification requirements to administer radiation to patients, to assure safety for the patient, health care facility staff, and the public.
For more information about this program, or for blank application, renewal or change of address/name forms, contact Division of Public Health’s Office of Radiation Control at 302-744-4546 or www.deph.org (click on “Regulations” on the Navigation Bar and scroll to “R” for Radiation).
Delaware Health and Social Services is committed to improving the quality of the lives of Delaware's citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
