FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS, RESPONSE CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND SPECIAL NEEDS
Emergency preparedness and response plans should include how to serve people with disabilities and special needs. Preparedness issues for Delawareans who rely on others for transportation, meals and medical care will be discussed at a conference on June 8 hosted by Delaware's Division of Public Health (DPH) and the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security. The event, organized by DPH's Preparedness Section, is free to the first 150 registrants and will be held at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in Dover from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The conference is designed for people with disabilities and special needs, families and advocates, service providers and agencies, emergency management personnel, first responders, business and government personnel, and volunteers. Attendees will gain knowledge, tools and materials to integrate this planning into their efforts.
The conference also addresses the needs of people with impaired mobility, vision, hearing, or other health issues. People with special needs can be physically or mentally challenged, very young, very old, bedridden or in frail health. They rely on others to care for them or check on them.
"Everyone should make emergency transportation and sheltering plans before disaster strikes," said Dr. Jaime H. Rivera, DPH director. "People with disabilities and special needs may be confined to bed, use oxygen systems, wheelchairs or walkers, or need medications administered. They need personalized emergency preparedness plans so they can safely evacuate and receive appropriate assistance."
Registration closes June 1. For registration instructions, visit www.specialneedspreparedness-de.net or call 202-338-7158, ext. 205 or 202-338-7216 (TTY). Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
