RADIATION PROTECTION PROFESSIONALS RECOGNIZED
FOR PROTECTING THE PUBLIC
To diagnose and treat disease, health care providers depend on radiation for dental and medical X-ray machines, computed tomography scanners, and radiopharmaceutical agents. Over 800 state-registered radiation facilities and 30 FDA-certified mammography facilities are located in Delaware. Radiation professionals ensure that radiation and radioactive materials are used safely to benefit, not jeopardize, Delawareans. Delaware's Division of Public Health (DPH) recognizes the important role of radiation protection professionals during National Radiation Protection Professionals Week, Nov. 6-12.
Radiation protection professionals include radiation control administrators, inspectors, radiation safety officers and medical physicists. Radiation and radioactive materials also benefit Delawareans in other ways: in security screening of packages and handbags, in radiography that checks the integrity of pipe welds in industry, and in medical research and development.
"Radiation professionals ensure that beneficial uses of radiation are safe and available throughout the healing arts, industry and research," said Dr. Jaime Rivera, DPH Director. "In recent years, they have contributed directly to radiological terrorism preparedness planning, in support of homeland security."
