FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS CAN REGISTER FOR ANNUAL RETAIL FOOD SAFETY CONFERENCE
Ensuring the safety of Delaware's food supply is the theme of a Sept. 13 conference hosted by Delaware Health and Social Services' Division of Public Health (DPH) and the Delaware Food Safety Council (DFSC). Tailored to food establishment management, the Retail Food Safety Conference will be held outside Dover at Polytech Adult Education's auditorium.
Don Kautter, Jr. of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Office of Food Safety, Defense and Outreach will address food defense on the national level. On July 26, the FDA, U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced a new collaboration with states and private industry to protect the nation's food supply from terrorist threats.
The New Jersey Food Council (NJFC) will discuss the lessons learned from their Top Off III exercise that received accolades from federal officials. The Food Allergen Network will detail how to guard consumers from eight primary food allergens.
Dr. Jaime H. Rivera, DPH director will join Barbara A. Brown, constituent relations director for Governor Ruth Ann Minner to recognize the nominees and winners of the 2005 Governor's Award for Excellence in Retail Food Safety. The annual award is presented to permitted restaurants, institutions, and retail food stores displaying conscientious and committed efforts to provide safe foods and beverages to consumers.
This year's conference takes place from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and includes a free lunch. Advance registration is available by contacting the Office of Food Protection at (302) 744-4546. Space is limited so register early.
Delaware Health and Social Services is committed to improving the quality of the lives of Delaware's citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
