FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLIFORM FOUND IN FREDERICA DRINKING WATER

According to state law, the Division of Public Health's Office of Drinking Water (ODW) informs the public that the Town of Frederica has increased chlorination of its drinking water and is flushing its water system in response to water tests that identified Coliform bacteria. Public notices were mailed to Frederica residents with their recent water bill. There is no emergency and residents do not need to boil the water or take other protective actions.

Samples collected Aug. 3 by ODW found no Coliform bacteria, an indication that chlorination is effective. ODW will collect additional samples next week to assure that corrective actions have been successful. ODW anticipates resolving this issue within two weeks.

Coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves. Coliforms are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially-harmful bacteria may be present. When Coliform bacteria are detected, ODW conducts follow-up testing to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E. coli, are present. Fecal coliform and E. coli were not found in follow-up testing at Frederica.

ODW routinely monitors drinking water safety. If this had been an emergency, the community would have been notified immediately. However, anyone with specific health concerns in this instance should consult their doctor.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received a notice directly.

Delaware Health and Social Services is committed to improving the quality of the lives of Delaware's citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
