Individuals involved in flood recovery are at higher risk for tetanus because they may receive cuts or puncture wounds while working among hurricane debris and floodwater. Children who were previously vaccinated are protected for five years. If an adult previously received a tetanus shot, they are protected for 10 years. Tetanus vaccine prevents the infection commonly known as lockjaw that can occur when bacteria enter such wounds.

DPH drinking water and environmental health specialists will be available at the clinic to answer questions about flood-related health issues. Educational handouts will also be available.

For more information, call DPH at 302-283-7587.
