"OPERATION CLEAN" - STUDENTS HELPING SENIOR CITIZENS FOR NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY

Wilmington Friends School Community Service Project at Parkview & Baynard Apartments

WILMINGTON - In recognition of National Youth Service Day, Wilmington Friends School students and faculty are teaming up with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of New Castle County to help area seniors with house cleaning.

"Operation Clean" will take place on Friday, April 11, 2003, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Parkview Apartments, 1800 N. Broom Street, and at Baynard Apartments, 308 W. 18th Street. Both are public housing facilities in Wilmington. More than 200 students from Friends School will help low- and moderate-income seniors perform light housekeeping chores such as mopping, window cleaning and dusting.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program from the State Office of Volunteerism is sponsoring "Operation Clean" in partnership with Acme Markets, Costco, Lowe's Home Improvement, Krispy Kreme, WaWa Convenience Stores, Superfresh, Super G, Allston Chemical Supply, Galer & Hults, Wholesale Janitor Supply Wilmington Housing Authority, State Representative Dennis P Williams, and City Wilmington Councilman Charles Potter, Jr.

National Youth Service Day, April 11-13, 2003, is the largest service event in the world, mobilizing millions of young Americans to identify and address the needs of their communities through service. National Youth Service Day is also an opportunity to recruit the next generation of volunteers and educate the public about the role of youth as community leaders.

Delaware Health and Social Services is committed to improving the quality of the lives of Delaware's citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
