REGISTRATION OPEN FOR 4th ANNUAL WOMEN'S WELLNESS EXPO

Oct. 24 will feature health screenings, workshops, exhibitors and more

Many women spend their time caring for others and often forget to take care of themselves. Delaware Health and Social Services (DHSS) invites women from Delaware and the region to plan now to spend a day focusing on their health - mind, body and spirit - at the 4th Annual Women's Wellness Expo on Oct. 24, 2003.

The Expo, presented by DHSS and The News Journal, is a fun, relaxing getaway for women, and an opportunity to learn ways to enrich their lives by improving their personal health and well-being. The Expo will provide high-quality information to help women take charge of their lives by creating balance, reducing stress and developing a formula for healthy living.

Last year's Expo attracted more than 600 participants and more than 60 exhibitors. An even greater response is expected this fall. This year's event will take place at the Dover Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center 8 a.m.-2:45 p.m. Planned workshops will cover healthy cooking, breast cancer, elder fitness, self-defense for women, mental health, financial well-being, alternative health care and more.

Free health information and screenings also will be available. Screenings available will include:

  • Body Mass Index
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Facial skin analysis for sun damage
  • Flu shots
  • Gambling
  • Nutrition
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cholesterol
  • Hearing
  • Vision
  • Blood pressure
  • Substance Abuse

The Expo will feature guest speaker Jackie Pflug, who survived being shot in the head during the 1985 hijacking of Egypt Air #648 and went on to rehabilitate herself, and become an internationally recognized speaker. Her book, Miles to Go Before I Sleep, will be available for sale and signing by the author at the event.

Registration is $20 and includes breakfast, lunch and all Expo materials and activities. Continuing education credits are available for a variety of disciplines.

This year's Expo is sponsored by Bayhealth Medical Center, Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Delaware HelpLine, Delaware Today, the Dover Sheraton, St. Francis Hospital, Training 3, WJBR and the Women, Infants and Children program.

More information and registration forms for participants are now available on the Internet at www.state.de.us/dhss/admin/wwe2003 or by phone -- call the Delaware HelpLine toll-free at (800) 464-HELP and ask for the Women's Wellness Expo.

Delaware Health and Social Services is committed to improving the quality of the lives of Delaware's citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
