'SHELTERING IN PLACE': WHAT IT MEANS
In the event of a disaster, officials may advise Delawareans and visitors to "shelter in place," or stay at their current location. This recommendation protects individuals from hazards in the community.
Rough weather and other hazards may pose a health risk. Travel may be dangerous or residents located in high-risk areas may need to evacuate first.
To educate Delawareans about what to do if they are instructed to "shelter in place," the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) and the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) provide these steps:
- Bring in pets.
- Locate flashlights and batteries.
- Close and lock all windows and exterior doors.
- Turn off all fans, heating and air conditioning systems.
- Close the fireplace damper.
- Get your disaster supplies kit and turn on the radio.
- Go to an interior room without windows that's above ground level.
- Listen to your radio, car radio or television until you are told all is safe or that you should evacuate. Adults may want to take turns listening to the news so they will not miss important updates and instructions. Adults may also want to prevent children from viewing graphic and frightening television news reports.
For more information about "sheltering in place" and preparing your household for emergencies, please contact DEMA at www.state.de.us/dema or call the county emergency operations centers: (302) 573-2855 in New Castle County, (302) 735-3465 in Kent County, and (302) 855-7801in Sussex County.
