FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DHSS TO OFFER INFORMATION ON HEALTH TOPICS, CHILD SUPPORT, MORE AT WILMINGTON WELLNESS DAY

Several DHSS Divisions to participate in event Saturday, Sept. 22 at Rodney Square

WILMINGTON - Delaware Health and Social Services (DHSS) will be among the agencies providing free health screenings and information at Wilmington Wellness Day on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at Rodney Square.

Among the activities at the annual wellness festival, DHSS; Division of Public Health (DPH) will be on-hand to provide information on eight health areas: nutrition, food safety, tobacco prevention, diabetes, dental care, immunizations, rabies, and Emergency Medical Services. DPH also will provide information about the Birth-to-Three Intervention/Child Development Watch program for developmentally delayed children.

DHSS' Division of Social Services will commit much of its time at Wilmington Wellness Day to promoting low-cost children's health insurance through the Delaware Healthy Children Program (DHCP). DHCP helps hard-working Delaware families that don't qualify for Medicaid get affordable health insurance for their children. For more information about DHCP, call 1-800-996-9969 or stop by DSS' table at Wilmington Wellness Day.

DHSS' Division of Child Support Enforcement (DCSE) also will provide information to help parents who are working to secure financial support for their children. Wilmington Wellness Day is just one of dozens of activities DCSE is participating in during September, which is Child Support Month, as part of its "Get the Word Out" campaign.

DHSS' Division for the Visually Impaired will demonstrate some of the technology available to help Delawareans with visual impairments, and will offer information about education, vocational rehabilitation, independent living, orientation and mobility, assistive technology, Braille instruction, and counseling for Delawareans who are blind or visually impaired.

DHSS' Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities will distribute information about services including congregate meals, Meals on Wheels, home health Walk Delaware, nutrition information emphasizing the "5 a Day for Better Health" message, medication management, ombudsman program, Medicare fraud, caregiving resources and more.

Join DHSS and more than 100 other exhibitors for a day filled with activities that promote safe, healthy lifestyles through prevention, awareness, early detection and education.

Delaware Health and Social Services is committed to improving the quality of the lives of Delaware's citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
