FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DPH TO DISTRIBUTE NEWLY RECEIVED FLU VACCINE

7,500 additional doses of influenza vaccine received

DOVER - In order to best serve those high-risk individuals who have not received this year's influenza vaccine, the Division of Public Health will be allocating its remaining vaccine to Public Health Walk-In Flu Clinics (schedule attached) and to physicians who serve high-risk children by participating in the Vaccine for Children program. The Vaccine for Children program provides vaccines for medically indigent children. The walk-in clinics will see eligible people strictly on first-come, first-serve basis. Only high-risk individuals can receive shots at Public Health clinics. Persons at high risk from complications from influenza are:

  • Persons aged 50 years and older;
  • Residents of nursing homes and other chronic-care facilities that house persons of any age who have chronic medical conditions;
  • Adults and children who have chronic disorders of the pulmonary or cardiovascular systems, including asthma;
  • Adults and children who have required regular medical follow-up or hospitalization during the past year because of chronic disease such as diabetes, kidney dysfunction, blood disorders or immunosuppression (e.g., caused by medications or HIV);
  • Children and teenagers (aged 6 months to 18 years) who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy and therefore might be at risk for developing Reye's syndrome after influenza infection;
  • Women who will be in the second or third trimester of pregnancy during the influenza season.

For additional information, please contact the Division of Public Health's Immunization Program at 1-800-282-8672.
