FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PUBLIC HEALTH TOUTS FREE MAMMOGRAMS AT WALMARTS AND ROSES STORES STATEWIDE
DPH's Screening For Life Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month during October
DOVER - Throughout October, many Delawareans will find the best bargains of their lives as WalMarts and Roses stores around the state help the Division of Public Health recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
To increase the number of Delaware women who get regular mammograms, DPH's Screening For Life (SFL) program will be signing women up for the potentially lifesaving tests outside of WalMarts and Roses.
Many women do not get regular mammograms and cervical cancer screenings because they do not have insurance or because their insurance does not cover the costs, but Screening for Life can help. WalMart and Roses have agreed to help promote breast health during October by allowing SFL to come to some of their stores to tell Delaware's women - and the men who love them - about the importance of breast and cervical cancer screenings. Screening For Life also will enroll eligible women on the spot and help them arrange an appointment to have a mammogram and cervical cancer screening.
One out of every eight women is at risk for developing breast cancer. In addition, the Women's Cancer Network finds that one in 28 women is at risk of dying from breast cancer. Research suggests that chances of survival are better if the cancer is detected early. Women who have a personal history of breast cancer; who have a mother, sister, or other close relative diagnosed with breast cancer; or who did not give birth until after age 30 also have a higher risk of breast cancer. In addition to helping clients get mammograms, SFL also encourages self-breast exam and clinical breast exam. All three are necessary to be sure breasts are healthy.
To find out whether you qualify for SFL benefits, call the Delaware HelpLine at (800) 464-HELP and ask for Screening for Life, or come to one of the following locations:
