SECRETARY SYLVESTER, DOCTOR TILLMAN TO HELP CELEBRATE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DELAWARE PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORY
Celebration will include presentation of several proclamations, employee recognition ceremony and visit from Smyrna High School students

| WHERE: | 30 Sunnyside Road, Smyrna, DE (located on the campus of the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill (DHCI). |
| WHO: | Gregg C. Sylvester, M.D., Secretary for Delaware Health and Social Services; Ulder Tillman, M.D., Director, Division of Public Health; Chris Zimmerman, Acting Director, Delaware Public Health Laboratory, Smyrna High School Students; staff members of the Laboratory. |
| WHY: | The Public Health laboratory was created on March 23, 1899 with the passage of Senate Bill 127, creating a "...pathological and bacteriological Laboratory to be used to investigate and detect, through microscopic and bacteriological investigation the presence of disease, thereby saving the health and lives of many citizens." In 1998, the laboratory investigated more than 1,500 TB skin tests, 800 specimens for Rabies, over 14,000 water samples for bacteria and chemicals, and more than 80,000 tests for infectious disease. |
