GOVERNOR CELEBRATES VOLUNTEERISM AS LIFE LONG EXPERIENCE
Week of April 18-24 Proclaimed National Volunteer Week in Delaware
Surrounded by volunteer award recipients, Governor Thomas R. Carper signed a proclamation today declaring the week of April 18-24, 1999 as National Volunteer Week in Delaware. "Volunteerism is a life-long experience," said Governor Carper, "and it can be the experience of a life time."
The youngest award recipient, Jeffery Sullivan, a six year old volunteer from Harrington, and the oldest award recipient, Richard Reese, Jr., an 85 year old volunteer from Wilmington stood beside Governor Carper as he delivered a message on community service. The event was held at Springer Middle School, a group recipient of the 1999 Governor's Youth Volunteer Service Award for their student mentoring program. Several of the students who mentor and read to young children from Edgemoore Day Care were on hand to celebrate volunteerism with the Governor.
National Volunteer week in Delaware provides an opportunity to recognize the many meaningful ways in which volunteers contribute to Delaware and to encourage all Delawareans to become involved in their community.
"What a powerful difference a mentor can make in the life of a young person in just one hour per week", Governor Carper said, "Throughout this week, be especially mindful of the efforts of volunteers, and consider how you can become involved and make a difference in your community."
Some suggested volunteer activities include:
- Mentoring young people
- Cleaning up a neighborhood or a park
- Helping at or visiting a nursing home
- Helping to deliver meals to the homebound
Other activities planned for National Volunteer Week in Delaware include the 1999 Governor's Outstanding Volunteer Awards Dinner on Thursday April 22, 1999. The twenty-five individuals, seven groups, and two businesses from throughout Delaware that will be honored for their remarkable volunteer involvement are listed on the attached sheets.
