MORE SPONSORS NEEDED FOR ADOPT-A-FAMILY

NEW CASTLE - During this holiday shopping season, please remember that nearly 150 families still await sponsors through this year's Adopt-a-Family program.

Adopt-a-Family provides essential household items and gifts for Delaware families in crisis throughout the year, but especially during the holiday season. Sponsors are matched to needy families through a referral process. In 1996, more than 5,500 individuals were served through the program, one of the oldest and largest holiday giving programs in the state.

Individuals can sponsor an older adult living alone or in a nursing home. Families can sponsor other families, or a small office can sponsor a larger family in need. All donations are anonymous.

The individuals sponsored by Adopt-a-Family have a variety of needs. Clothing, toys and basic household goods are the most frequently requested items. Sponsors are asked to purchase the items and deliver them to a county Adopt-a-Family site, where they are sorted and prepared for delivery by other volunteers. Monetary donations are accepted and used to purchase vouchers for children's shoes.

To help, call one of the three Adopt-a-Family locations: 792-9538 in New Castle County, 739-3145 in Kent County, or 855-0323 in Sussex County. (Please note that the Kent County number is different from the one published in November.)

Adopt-a-Family is operated by DHSS' Division of State Service Centers.

Delaware Health and Social Services is committed to improving the quality of the lives of Delaware's citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
