About OCME

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was established when legislation was passed in two consecutive sessions of the General Assembly in 1969 and 1970. The legislation abolished a constitutionally mandated system of county coroners, deputy coroners and coroners' physicians. In addition, the legislation created the Forensic Sciences Laboratory within the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
