Orientation and Mobility Program
The mission of the Orientation and Mobility (O&M) program is to provide blind and visually impaired consumers of all ages with the opportunities to develop the skills necessary to achieve their goals of traveling independently, efficiently, confidently, and safely in their environments. Losing some or all of your vision may lead you to feel like you've lost your independence. The O&M unit can help you maintain that independence in a variety of environments. A certified O&M specialist can assist you at home, at school, within and around your community, or on a job site.
Some of the skills they teach are:
- Long White Cane skills
- Support Cane skills
- Sensory Awareness
- Spatial Concepts
- Street Crossings
- Public and Specialized Transportation Systems
- A variety of community services such as getting around your local grocery store or favorite restaurant
O&M Specialists are certified by the Academy of Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) to become a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS).
