Mental illness has long been identified as the loneliest illness because of the isolation and stigmatism typically experienced by patients. The role of the community is critical in reducing the isolation. Community volunteers serve as role models and encourage appropriate social skills and behaviors. Most importantly, volunteers provide friendship and caring for individuals often described as the forgotten ones. Here at Delaware Psychiatric Center you can offer a relationship to patients that is uniquely different from the patient-employee relationship. You will be surprised at how much joy you will bring into their lives. You really can make a difference. Delaware Psychiatric Center offers a wide variety of volunteer placements. Your skills and interests will be matched with one of the many volunteer positions available such as:
- Occupational Therapy
- Therapeutic Recreation
- Activities of Daily Living Therapy
- Patient Library
- Medical Library
- Clerical Work
- Blue Hen Shop (clothing center)
- Training Center
- Unit Party Sponsor
Volunteers are needed in both patient-occupied and administrative areas. You decide how much time you can donate and what you would like to do, and we will train you and tailor a volunteer experience to meet your needs. You will be well rewarded with the satisfaction of knowing you have made a real difference in the lives and environment of our patients!
Delaware Psychiatric Center is seeking donations of warm coats for the winter season.
For more information about these and other volunteer projects, please contact the Community Relations Officer, listed in DSAMH's Contact Info
