Summer Institute

Knowledge is power
The power to heal
The power to improve life

Giving and caring
Loving and sharing
To bring in goodness and light

Finding out things
One does not know
The healing phase will start

By finding out
About one's self
Begins the change of heart

The things we learn
In that week
We take back and share
Because the work
That we do
We do because we care

Thank You
Summer Institute

~Charles Johnson

We are proud to recognize the work of author Charles Johnson, a participant at the 2009 Summer Institute. Charles is 49 years old and was married for over eleven years. When things fell apart last year, he went though depression, suicidal thoughts, and a mental breakdown. Charles was in a hospital for seven days and he is still in therapy to rebuild his life. He is a member of NAMI Delaware.

This past July, the DSAMH Training Office presented, from around the country, experts in promising practices, new research, and evidenced-bases practices in mental health and substance abuse. Participants were invited to attend the numerous experiential workshops over the week long Institute to gain knowledge, develop skills, and establish partnerships. There were opportunities for networking, thought-provoking discussions, and 'food for thought', something we plan to duplicate at the next Summer Institute!

The theme "Partnerships: Changing the World" was presented by the keynote speaker Ken Minkoff, MD.

Dr. Kenneth Minkoff

Dr. Minkoff spoke on partnering to develop a welcoming and integrated system of care for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, their families, and support systems. He helped us to build on the work we have done and identify research based principles of successful treatment interventions, using a common language from the fields of addiction and mental health. His keynote address reviewed examples of system difficulties faced by individuals with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders, and explain how a comprehensive, continuous, integrated system of care maximizes the existing resources so that all programs achieve Dual Diagnosis Capability to support recovery.
