AoA Health Promotion Campaign Draws Upon Delaware's Experience
“You Can! Steps to Healthier Aging” is a new health promotion campaign aimed at educating older persons about the benefits of physical activity and improved food choices. The campaign, created for organizations that serve older Americans, was developed by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Aging (AoA), Washington, D.C.
Delaware’s Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD) has extensive health promotion experience, which was shared with the planners of the AoA campaign.
“We pioneered the ‘Walk Delaware’ healthy aging promotion several years ago. The Delaware Senior Olympics organization has grown ‘Walk Delaware’ to a major statewide healthy aging event.” We shared our experiences along with other states to help the AoA develop the “You Can!” program, said Chris Oakes, DSAAPD Health Educator.
Oakes is encouraging senior centers and organizations in Delaware’s “aging network” to participate in the AoA campaign. For information, log on to AoA’s website: www.aoa.gov/youcan/.
