Help for Managing Your Diabetes
If you have diabetes, either Type 1 or Type 2, Medicare can provide valuable assistance in your diabetes management. Here are items that are covered by Medicare Part B:
Testing Supplies:
- Meter to test blood glucose
- Strips to use with meter
- Replacement batteries for meter
- Lancets
- Lancet device
Medical Services:
- Dilated eye exams
- Podiatrist visits
- Custom-fitted shoes (as required)
Education Classes (Diabetes Self-Management Training Benefit/ DSMT) and Counseling
- Classes are offered by local hospitals, providing information on all aspects of diabetes care and self-management. Call ChristianaCare, Bayhealth and Beebe Hospitals for class availability.
- Individual nutritional counseling (Medical Nutritional Therapy/MNT) is available in an outpatient setting for people with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Call your local hospital for availability. Three hours for the first year and two hours for subsequent years is provided under this benefit.
Your Medicare Part B co-pay and deductible will apply to these services and supplies, so a small charge may be requested.
When ordering a meter, it is essential to first look at many meters, before you decide. Depending on your physical limitations, a specific meter may be your best choice. Your healthcare provider or Certified Diabetes Educator can help with your decision.
In addition to providing information about Medicare benefits, the Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD) provides ongoing, monthly education groups at many sites throughout the state. These groups have been successful for many years as a source of updated information on managing diabetes.
DSAAPD also provides speakers on diabetes education for groups in location such as senior centers and churches. For information, contact DSAAPD's Health Educator .
