Healthwise for Life
During the mid-1990's, the Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD) sponsored the Healthwise for Life program for older persons in Delaware. At that time, intensive training in the Healthwise program was provided to various individual volunteers, such as nurses and others, who in turn, presented Healthwise information to seniors groups throughout the State. After this initial period, the trainers worked independently, scheduling and providing Healthwise for Life to interested groups.
The Healthwise for Life program provides participants with useful information to help them understand and care for many common physical and mental health issues. Specifically, it helps participants to recognize symptoms; to provide self-care when appropriate; to know when to contact a health care profesional; and to know how to be a wise consumer of health care.
There is no charge for participation in the Healthwise for Life program. The program is scheduled and carried out by the trained Healthwise volunteers, and all materials are supplied by DSAAPD. (Healthwise participants receive two paperback manuals: Your Guide to Self-Care for Healthy Aging and Growing Wiser: The Older Person's Guide to Mental Wellness.)
