Eat 5 A Day for Better Health

In conjunction with the Produce for Better Health Foundation, the Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD) has been working to get the word out in Delaware: eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day for better health.

DSAAPD has taken up this campaign in recognition of the fact that inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption is one of the leading health risk factors among older adults.

On May 18, 2000, a national 5 A DAY ACROSSS THE USA tour began in California. It traveled 6,100 miles, and concluded in Washington, DC on June1.   DSAAPD partnered with the Produce for Better Health Foundation to bring the event to Wilmington on June 2. During the event, participants had the opportunity to sample foods provided by local vendors, gather information, and sign a pledge to eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

If you were not able to attend this event, be sure to visit the Produce for Better Health Foundation's 5 A Day website (http://www.5aday.com) for recipes, links, and lots of other useful information.   You can even use the site to sign the pledge to eat 5 A Day!

The 5 A Day campaign is part of DSAAPD's Millennium March to Wellness initiative to encourage older Delawareans to take charge of their health. For more information, contact DSAAPD's Health Educator.
