New Services Available in Delaware for Persons with Acquired Brain Injury

The Delaware Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD) has begun to provide services for persons with acquired brain injury under a new home and community-based waiver program.

The Medicaid Waiver for Acquired Brain Injury is a program to designed provide enhanced services and support for eligible adults with acquired brain injury to enable them to live as independently as possible. A Medicaid Waiver allows states to use Medicaid funds to provide services in home and community based settings instead of in nursing homes. The program was approved by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to serve up to 50 persons during its first year of operation.

The program is being operated by DSAAPD with oversight from the Division of Medicaid and Medical Assistance (DMMA), the state Medicaid agency in Delaware.

The Medicaid Waiver for Acquired Brain Injury includes the following services:

  • Case Management
  • Assisted Living
  • Adult Day Services
  • Day Habilitation
  • Cognitive Services
  • Personal Care
  • Respite Care
  • Personal Emergency Response

Persons enrolled in the program receive a comprehensive assessment and a care plan to meet their individual needs.

A presentation about the launch of the new waiver program was made at the Delaware Life Conference on January 24, 2008. A copy of the presentation slides are available here in PDF and text-only formats. (Please see the download help page if you have questions about viewing a PDF file on your computer.)
