Environmental & Molecular Microbiology
The Delaware Public Health Laboratory Environmental & Molecular Microbiology (EMM) section conducts testing for isolation and identification of bacteria associated with foodborne disease using culture and molecular methods. Total and fecal coliforms, or E. coli, are determined as indicators of pollution in drinking water. EMM also tests for antibiotics in raw milk and performs the typing of certain species of bacterial isolates by pulse field gel elcetrophoresis (PFGE) for epidemiologic investigation. Identification is performed to detect Norwalk-like viruses and Bordetella pertussis.
