Image: Family walking on beachQuestions about physical activity levels are asked in the Delaware Behavioral Risk Factor Survey on odd-numbered years. For physical activity data from 2001, visit the interactive database on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.

One question about leisure time inactivity, however, is asked on alternate years to allow trend analysis. The question asked in 2002 was: "During the past month, other than your regular job, did you participate in any physical activities or exercises such as running, calisthenics, golf, gardening or walking for exercise?"

  • 27% of Delaware adults got no leisure time physical activity.
  • 23% of adult males got no leisure time activity, compared to 31% of adult women.
  • 43% of African American and 49% of Hispanic adults reported no leisure time activity.
  • Sedentary, or inactive, leisure time becomes more common as people get older.   Only 16% of young adults (18-24) reported no activity.  But inactivity becomes more prevalent with each age group, with 34% of adults 65 and older reporting no physical activity.
